Mayumi Oda in a retrospective survey spanning 40 years of creative work by the artist is scheduled to open at the East Hawaii Cultural Center with a 6:00 pm reception for Mayumi who will be present and entertainment from Gamelan of the Molten Blossom on First Friday, May 3, 2019. The exhibition will feature a selection of silk screen, wood block, intaglio, and calligraphic works from the artist’s Buddhist, Heart Sutra, Kannonkyo, Goddess, and Ocean Series. And include five (5) major original Thangkas that reflect an exceptionally bold and delightfully inventive feminist spirit.

The exhibition titled NIUHI-SHARK honors Kamehameha The Great in both paint and prose with original paintings created by Carl F. K. Pao paired with selections from the book Kamehameha–The Rise of a King by Kāwika Eyre. The exhibit in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of King Kamehameha’s death will open on Saturday, April 6th with artist and author present at an opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the East Hawai’i Cultural Center/HMOCA located at 141 Kalakaua St. in Downtown Hilo.

HI CONTEMPORARY ART SHOW 2018

Clayton Amemiya:
I have been producing wood fired ceramics in Waiakea Uka for over 30 years.  The vast majority of my firings have been with Ohia, due to it's availability, but I have used a variety of firewood like lychee, keawe, eucalyptus and pine.  My kiln, an anagama (tunnel kiln), fires pots for approximately 100 hours using over two cords of wood and this long firing produces fly ash that coats parts of the finished pots in a natural glaze.
