People are animals too. Sometimes we forget this. We are the most powerful and destructive species out there, vicious to each other and to our animal cousins.
 
We still have aspects of the lizard brains of our ancestors. Fight, f**k or flight responses in social situations surge through our bodies and influence our behavior.
 
Human animals can be instinctual, cruel, and petty. We keep ourselves busy playing games of chance and power, all the while looking for acceptance and companionship. Some of us are kind and generous, and others are driven by competition and greed. Some of us just want to get by while others… want to be on top.
 
Beyond the basic needs of shelter, clothing and food, we want to feel good. We run the spectrum from worker bee to predator. We have personas that range all the way from the Dalai Lama to Charles Manson.
 
We want things to be convenient and easy but we are on an unsustainable path of destruction. We are responsible for causing a great die-off and environmental collapse. Damn Animals falls within the dynamic of the human condition that we all find ourselves in.
 
Those Damn Animals are always causing a ruckus and making a mess with their selfishness and instant gratification mentality. They just want to have fun until the games get serious. Then the survival instincts kick in and someone gets hurt. Can kindness and good win over? Or are the animals burning the ship?

This assessment of the human condition is on full display in his complex and sometimes disturbing imagery, which evokes the densely bizarre art of Hieronymus Bosch. This visual feast for the adult viewer is not suitable for children.

Brill has been exhibiting in Hilo, Honolulu, as well as venues in California and New York since 1993. His limited-edition book “Damn Animals (a coloring book for adults)” will be available for purchase at the EHCC gallery during his exhibition.

This year the exhibition will start on February 6th (Saturday), 10am-2pm. Normal gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10am-4pm. The EHCC will be adhering to the following GALLERY Policies and Procedures at this time:

  • All visitors are required to wear a face mask to enter the gallery as recommended by the CDC and following County and State of Hawaiʻi regulations. 

  • Maximum of 10 people (including EHCC team members) allowed in the GALLERY space at all times.

  • Maintain a social distance of six feet between you and others as much as possible. 

  • We encourage “no-contact” forms of communication like waving hello, thumbs up/down, and air hugs; please avoid unnecessary physical contact. 

  • If you feel in any way unwell or sick, please STAY HOME and visit us another time. Thank you.
