Monika Mann: Follow the Light

The East Hawaii Cultural Center is pleased to present artists, stephen u lang and Monika Mann in concurrent exhibition installations opening First Friday August 2nd, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in downtown Hilo. The artists both address the nature of existence and the certainty of transition from life.

"We are because of roots. Roots make life possible by transferring vital elements from the body of the earth to the life forms occupying the surface above. The roots of plants seek out and absorb nutrients that the plant uses to construct all the molecules of life. These molecules are consumed and recycled through the various lifeforms that make up our world. It all starts with roots. The result through time has been all the life that lives or has lived in the realm of the atmosphere.
We are because of roots. We cannot live without them. Everything about life is more beautiful than it needs to be. Life is graceful. Life is visually stunning, even the parts we cannot see. A plant has a balance between its atmospheric part and its underground part. As above, so below. Half of all plant life on earth is below the surface.
This show seeks to honor and express this most vital element of existence. Before animal life could occupy the surface of the earth, plants had to prepare that surface to support them. Animal life has thrived under that support and now that basic function has produced us.We are because of roots."-stephen u lang

lang has produced art on the Big Island for 45 years as a painter and sculptor. This show will feature a wood installation constructed of guava, croton, mangrove and giant albesia trees in the mauka gallery.

“Most people will literally do anything to avoid thinking about death. It is probably THE taboo in our society. I do not have any answers to the questions that philosophers have been thinking about for centuries, but I wanted to create an environment that explores some of my feelings on the subject matter.” -Monika Mann

Mann has been a working artist on the Big Island for 25 years. Her exhibit in the makai gallery features a mixed media installation using a variety of materials.

This event is free and open to the public. Regular gallery hours 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Tuesday through Saturday. For additional information please contact us via email: [email protected] or phone: (808) 961-5711
