The Paths We Cross: A look at Korean and Korean-American Culture, Art and History on the Big Island

This exhibition examines Korean history and Korean identity in relation to the Big Island, an interesting crossroads for various waves of immigration from the Peninsula. We have brought together a renowned calligrapher from Seoul, Mrs. Hae Kyung Seo (서혜경) - whose works fuse different cultural traditions and reflect a budding interest in Hawai‘i—and a Korean contemporary artist, Byoung Yong Lee (이병용) who immigrated to Hilo and who spent the last decade of his life exploring spiritual themes and encouraging the local Korean community to become more prominent. Their work is accompanied by narratives that delve into the triumphs and traumas of history, which inevitably influenced local stories and local voices that you find here.

This exhibition was a collaboration with UH Hilo Humanities Division, UH Hilo Chancellor's Diversity Committee, Student Equity, Exellence & Diversity at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (SEED). Supported by the Hawai'i Council For The Humanities and Korea Foundation.

This exhibition was included in a published book by UH Hilo and written by Head of Humanities at UH, Seri Luangphinith: https://ehcc.org/content/paths-we-cross-book-launch
