SILENT DANCE PARTY 2017

Program type
Special Event
Dates
Friday, April 21, 2017 - 18:00 - Friday, April 21, 2017 - 22:00

The East Hawaii Cultural Center/Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art (EHCC) in Hilo, Hawaii is hosting its first annual Silent Dance Party & LGBT Film Festival on Friday, April 21, 2017 at the historic Kalakaua Park and we ask for your kokua. The event coincides with the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) Day of Silence, a national activity that brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools, illustrating the silencing effect these incidents have on LGBT individuals.

In early Hawaiian society however, relationships were fluid and diverse, and inclusive of same-gender partnerships. It is the intention of EHCC to celebrate Hawaii's tradition of individuality, relationship diversity and acceptance of its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

The Silent Dance Party is envisioned as a safe and festive event in which all people regardless of race, ethnicity, age, and sexual orientation and/or expression are welcomed to a night of dancing, where people come as their unique, individual selves equipped with their own music and headsets to tango, cha-cha, swing or simply move as a diverse yet collective whole, under the glow of lights and the Hilo sky. A gathering in which the essence of aloha is extended to all, free for all, and celebrated by all.

The Film Festival will feature six documentaries that address LGBT discrimination, as well as provide opportunity for attendees to view the lives of this minority with empathy and a new perspective. It is the hope of EHCC to offer knowledge that erases misconceptions about the reality of LGBT people, and galvanize our community to embody equity as a right to all humankind.

As a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, the EHCC values collaboration and partnership. We understand that through joint individual and organizational efforts, we are capable of influencing society in positive and productive ways. Please consider supporting our Silent Dance Party & LGBT Film Festival through a monetary donation, gift-in-kind or as a volunteer. Additional information can be sent per request, listing ways in which you can be a part of the celebration. We hope that you can join us!
