We humans seek rhythm. Rhythm is a pattern, the assurance that events will repeat themselves, be knowable, even predictable in some way. Our mother’s heartbeat thrums assurance in the womb, birthing to accompany lullabies. Song verses tell stories of frightening journeys away from home, but the recurrent chorus always returns us to the pulse.

We seek patterns in nature, leaf structure, animal migrations, dark and light, seasons and years. When we can’t find rhythm, we invent patterns; our calendar – months, hours, minutes, seconds, and we count them. We create deities and chant, intone, and recite to bring the cacophony of life’s chaotic weaving into synchronicity.

Kaori Ukaji generates intimate rhythmic processes -- mark-making metaphors of paths through existence. Her highly personal rituals order an avalanche of analog information, each composition a unique terrifying iteration of aesthetic synergy in which chaos is the journey, pattern is the path home.

Solo exhibition running from August 4-26, 2017.

Opening reception on the 4th.
