Through the exhibition “Grief” at the East Hawai'i Cultural Center, international artist and educator Douglas Diaz examines his personal grieving process in a world overwhelmed by the global pandemic. 

The artist’s work was created in response to a shattering change in his daily existence, when his life was forever altered by the loss of a beloved partner. This was followed by the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic that swept the entire world soon after. When these two profound events overlapped, his personal grief intertwined with a collective pain and confusion. To cope with these devastating circumstances, Diaz turned to the creative process searching for solace and answers.

In addition to the completed paintings, the exhibition includes a temporary studio where Diaz will paint on the opening day and at various times throughout the exhibition. Because the grieving process proceeds on its own timeline, it is hard to predict when waves of inspiration will strike, moving Diaz to continue work. Gallery visitors may see Diaz hard at work, or may see the emptiness of an unattended studio, a reflection of the unpredictability of human responses to loss.

Exhibition starts December 4th, 2021 from 10am to 2pm.

Biography:
Douglas Diaz (b. 1972) is a Brooklyn, New York born artist. His work explores questions of his own humanity, challenging preconceptions and thoughts, embracing fears and the darkness that lies deep within the unconscious in an attempt to gain spiritual equanimity.
 
His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows since 2015 across Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and the United States. In 2017, Douglas had his first solo museum exhibition titled SHUKKE  at Art 1 Museum, Indonesia. His work is collected privately and publicly in more than 20 different countries.

  • Maximum of 10 people (including EHCC team members) allowed in the gallery space at all times.

  • We encourage “no-contact” forms of communication like waving Hello, thumbs up/down, and air hugs; please avoid unnecessary physical contact.
