33rd Annual Trash Show: Hawaii Artists Recycle

October 7th - November 25th, 2022

Opening Friday October 7th from 6:00 - 8:00PM

For thirty-three years, Big Island artists have been recycling the island’s trash into works of art.  East Hawaii Cultural Center’s annual Trash Art: Hawaii Artists Recycle has become a cultural fixture on Hilo’s social landscape.  The show took a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, but it returns from October 7 to November 25 at EHCC’s main gallery.

“These shows become more relevant each year,” says the show’s founder and juror, local artist Ira Ono.  “Imagine: It’s year 33 and local artists are once again in the vanguard for our planet.”

With this exhibition we hope to educate and increase the understanding of the island’s socioeconomic landscape and ecosystem, to encourage artists and viewers to re-think the shop and drop mentality, and to stimulate our brains and hearts to find ways in which we may lower the carbon footprint for our islands.

Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
